Science

At Church Aston our science is based on real events, observations, and contexts within the world as far as possible. Children are given opportunity to understand the importance of science and scientists and the impact that science has had on the world and possibilities in the future. We aim to develop children’s excitement for knowledge and understanding of science. To develop their scientific skills for them to begin to understand how scientific enquiry and investigation skills are important.

EYFS

Children are introduced to science through Understanding the World and topics that are inspired by this. Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community. We look for evidence of the use of science in the community and the wider world for children to relate to. We use a range of texts both fiction and nonfiction that support the topic and children’s own interests to develop curiosity, widen scientific language and deepen children understanding of early scientific concepts, knowledge, and skills.

KS1

Scientific knowledge and skills are built on from the EYFS curriculum as children move through KS1. Their use and understanding of scientific language are extended. The approach to learning about scientific knowledge and skills is still very much inquiry and based in real experiences as far as possible. The children have a weekly science lesson that is taught mostly in year groups in order that the progression of scientific knowledge and skills can be specifically taught. Children are encouraged to apply their scientific skills and knowledge to investigate and communicate their findings.
