Guidance on Coronavirus Symptoms

The 3 most common symptoms of COVID-19 are:

  • A new continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • A high temperature - this means feeling hot to touch on chest or back (you do not need to measure the temperature)
  • Loss of smell &/or taste – this means that you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell different to normal

Most people with COVID-9 have at least one of these symptoms.

If your child is absent from school with diarrhoea and/or or vomiting (gastrointestinal symptoms) they will not be able to return to school until 48 hours after their last symptom as normal however during this absence you will also need to monitor your child for any other possible COVID-19 symptoms.  Gastrointestinal symptoms are also a possible COVID-19 symptom in young children.
